Before you apply a marble polish, you want to make sure that your marble is clean. Just as you wouldn't apply wax to a dirty floor, neither do you want to apply polish to dirty marble. Keeping in mind that you want to make sure that the surface remains free of blemishes, you want to use a marble cleaner that removes the dirt but is not abrasive. There are plenty of cleaners on the market that can work well for this, or you can make your own. Don't use harsh detergents, either; they can cause your marble to develop a dull finish after a while. The standard rule with marble is to use gentle cleansers that rinse off well.
You don't necessarily want to use the same polish on your marble that you do on other things in your home. What you polish your silver with will probably not work as marble polish, and you definitely don't want to use car polish. One thing that you can do is ask the manufacturer of your marble piece to recommend a good polish. They probably have one or two that they recommend that would work well, and if you use what they recommend you will probably be staying within any warranty guidelines. You can also go online and do some research on marble polish. You'll find that most of the time the polish that is recommended will contain tin oxide. This is used frequently and usually works well.
As long as you keep your marble clean and use a good marble polish, you should be able to enjoy your investment for a very long time. Don't be afraid to call in a professional if you think that despite your best efforts your marble is not looking as good as it should, though. It will probably be worth it to you in the long run.
