Actually, there is no specific method to massage your cat because cats, like people have different likes and dislikes, but if you are a newbie in raising a cat then these steps may help.

It is best to start from the chin as most cats adore having their chins and backs rubbed. The chin and throat is extremely sensitive for any cats. With a new cat it is best to start with a chin rub. Run one finger down the side of your kitty's cheekbone, run it down the side of the chin and then down the neck of the collarbone. Repeat a few times. Start with that first. After a few days, for variation, you can use two fingers, wiggling them a little as you move through the fur.

Once you and your cat are comfortable with the chin and throat, you can continue with a back rub. Use a finger or two to rub the chin and then smoothly, move to the back for a back rub. Then, just run an open hand from the neck down to the tailbone in a long smooth sweep. Don't apply too much or too little pressure. Always aim for firm but gentle contact.

Some cats are nervous especially if they are new to you. If you notice that your cat is a little nervous, consider that cat's natural enemies come from the above. Avoid starting with your hands above its head. Always rub with the coat. Don't go against it. Rubbing against the grain of the fur is usually taken as an invitation to play wrestle. You want it to be in a relax manner, so take note of this. Stroking cat's fur rhythmically can also help nervous cats calm down and sad cats cheer up.

Avoid stroking the belly. Many cats have very ticklish tummies, especially the young ones. Some cats will enjoy having their bellies stroked, but for a new (and nervous) cat, it will find this position too vulnerable to handle and switch to defensive aggression.

Once your cat get used to these, try the ears and head. Scratch behind its ear or just rub the entire ear. Don't forget the top of its head.

Massage increases the cat's circulation and improves overall health and well-being. Massaging your cat gives you the opportunity to check the surface of kitty's body for abnormalities like tumors, cuts, skin irritations or even weight loss as you will be touching your cat regularly. It is not only good for you cat, but also for you. Just as mothers bond with their kittens by grooming, your cat feels closer to you emotionally when you stroke their fur. There is nothing better on a sunny Sunday afternoon than having your feline companion sit purring contentedly on your lap. The purr-fect moments with your pet is rewarding.

When you hear that purr sounds slowly creeping out, you know that you are doing it right.
