Math proves to be a common problem for many people in college. The good news is that it doesn't have to be because most colleges offer either some type of formal or informal math tutoring program. If you find that you are having problems locating a tutoring program in your college, most upper level college students are quite willing to tutoring other students in order to sharpen their own skills and pick up some extra money as well. Regardless of which type of tutoring program you take part in, you can be sure to get the most of it by following these tips:

It can be hard to have a good attitude about math, especially when you do not enjoy it and you are having problems with it; however, maintaining a good attitude while you are attending a math tutoring program is essential to your success. Even if you don't always feel like it, always do the very best that you possibly can. This will help your tutor know where you need the most help and you won't waste time on concepts that you do not need help on.

Success in math tutoring also depends on being prepared when you come to each session. You should always make sure that you bring your textbook with you along with any assignments you have received in class and the tools you need to perform the task at hand, such as paper, pencil and a calculator, if you need one for the assignments.

Try not to feel intimated by the tutor. Remember that he or she is there to help you and wants you to succeed. Just because you are having problems with math now doesn't mean that you won't be able to learn how to properly perform the problems with time and the properly guidance.

Always show up to your tutoring sessions on time and respect the fact that your tutor has other responsibilities as in addition to your tutoring session. Don't abuse the situation by showing up late and expecting the tutor to re-arrange his or her schedule to suit you.

Do make a point to make notes of concepts that you find difficult to solve in class and bring them with you to your next tutoring session.

If you find that you still do not understand a concept, be honest with your tutor. It could be that the information simply needs to be presented in a different manner. It is for your own benefit to be completely honest about your comprehension rather than simply trying to speed a session along.

Remember that the ability to work most math problems improves with practice, so ask your tutor for extra problems to work in between sessions and then have them review the problems you've worked at the next session to make sure you fully understand that particular concept.

Finally, try to pay as close attention as possible during your math tutoring sessions. If this is a group tutoring session, remember that conversation should be kept for after the session. This is your time to learn so that you can do well on your next math exam.
