Mattress Recycling

I have been shopping around recently trying to find a new mattress for my master bedroom. I have found that I really didn't know much at all about new mattresses and how to choose one that would be comfortable and durable. I also did not know what I was going to do with my old mattress. I did some research and it turns out that mattress recycling is gaining popularity. Mattress recycling is where mattresses are collected as used material that would be otherwise turned into waste.

Recycling has become more and more popular in the last decade. Many communities now employ curbside recycling to help their community dispose of items that can have a post consumer use. A lot of elementary schools have started programs to teach children about the need for recycling and what types of things can be recycled.

Most people are at least aware of the recycling trends in America, whether or not they participate. Some states have a forced recycling program of sorts. For instance, Michigan charges a bottle deposit for soda bottles and refunds this deposit when the bottle is returned. There are fewer glass bottles in the landfills of Michigan than the landfills of states that do not use the method for recycling.

There have been various centers opening up all over the United States and the United Kingdom that offer full mattress recycling. I think that it is exciting that there is a way to recycle polyureethanes at a low cost. There is one center in California that has been able to recover the parts of more than twenty five thousand mattresses in just one year. That is a lot of material that will not be going into a landfill.

Landfills are waste disposal sites located throughout America that deposit waste either onto or into land. Before the arrival of modern landfills in America, most Americans lived in barely populated rural farming communities and most incinerated their garbage. Burning garbage has become outlawed in most municipalities due to environmental and safety concerns. Mattress recycling can help reduce some of the stress on the landfills of America.

I started to think about other bulky items that I have disposed of or will need to dispose of sometime in the near future. I have an old computer and I researched on the internet what types of options I have for getting rid of it. I found out that there are a lot of organizations that will accept my old computer as a donation to reuse if possible. I also found out that my community offers electronics collection as part of our household hazardous waste collections. If I hadn't been originally checking into mattress recycling, I would have never found out what to do with my old computer.
