Mattress Sizes

I have purchased many mattresses over the years. There are so many different mattress sizes. I purchased a twin mattress for my daughter when she was five. That type of mattress is also called a single mattress.

She did not have any special orthopedic needs and I just picked the cheapest mattress at my local mattress store. I remember that she was very excited to have her first "big girl" bed. She was given the opportunity to choose her accessories. She chose to have pink retro flowers on the bedding and window coverings.

My stepson decided when he was ten years old that he wanted to go mattress shopping. He looked at all of the mattress sizes in the store and settled on a full size bed. The difference in width from the twin mattress he had been sleeping on and the full size mattress he wanted was fifteen inches.

He used this mattress for five years before it was replaced. He was still a young boy when we purchased the full size bed and I remember that he wanted to decorate his room with a sports theme. It is hard to remember all of the details anymore, but I remember lots of soccer balls and lots of black and white.

When my stepson turned fifteen, it was hard to deny that he was just too tall for his bed. I went to the local mattress and furniture store in our town and looked at the mattress sizes to solve our problem. I had never heard of a full x-long bed before. The salesman did not have any of this special bed in stock, but was able to order it for us.

It turns out that a full x-long bed is five inches longer than a regular full size bed. I realized at the time of purchase that if the bed itself had to be special orders, then the bedding probably did as well. I'm glad I thought of this. I stopped at several stores on my way home and none of them carried sheets for a twin x-long bed. I tried online to find sheets and found several places that had sheets to fit the new bed.

My daughter decided when she was ten that she needed a new mattress. I think that she decided this because her brother had gotten a new mattress when he was ten. I was surprised when I took her to the furniture store that she did not want a full size mattress like her brother had wanted.
