Medical sales and 5 ways to upset your manager

1) Routinely hand your paperwork in after the dealine. Most managers in medical sales allocate one day per week, usually Monday. This means they can get it all signed off to spend the rest of the week out in the field. If you get your paperwork in by Wednesday every week, this means he has to do this when he returns from a field visit, instead of being able to use this time to play with his kids!

Many sales people are not naturally good at administration. The solution is to make sure you allocate enough time. The only worse sin than above is having your boss have to call you every week to remind it's late and to send it in. This simply reinforces what a pain you really are!

2) Forget your bosses field visit and don't turn up to see him. Standing your boss up for a field visit is a real bad move. It either shows that the field visit was some unimportant to you that you simply forgot, or that you are hopelessly disorganised or indeed both. Your boss only sees 5% of what you do, and field visits are 95% of this, give them 110% if you want to stay in pole position for that promotion, or ensure you get a good pay rise.

3) Turn up late for sessions on conference. If only 5% of what you do is seen by your boss, only 1% or less is seen by his boss. If 100% of what he sees is you being late on conference, guess what the assumption is for all of the rest of your work? In this age of technology you wouldn't think is possible to fail to set appropriate alarms while on conference. For you career prospects, make sure you are not the one turning up late in full view of the entire company.

4) Run up a restaurant bill to more than your credit card allowance so that you have to call your boss to use his card at 1am! Yes that's my hand is in the air for this one. Fortunately for me, I had achieved such good results spending lots of money in restaurants that he could see what was in it for him. But, I don't think many medical sales managers would be so understanding. It's always worth a call to check how much room is left on your card and guessing your evenings spend in advance.

5) Don't ignore his advice. You may disagree with him, in which case, discuss further, debate, compromise. But, don't simply turn away in disagreement and ignore the advice. Once this is transparent your relationship will likely not recover as the trust has apparently gone. If you disagree with your boss, have the courage to say so and debate it, he should respect you for this so long as it's done in a respectful way.

You relationship with your boss may come under great strain at times, However, much rides on your ability to preserve and maintain, pay reviews, appraisals and so on, give it the respect it deserves.
