Many women believe that once you get pregnant, any menstruation ceases, but this is not always the case. For some women, the early stages of pregnancy can be marked by spotting, which is interpreted as a sign of menstrual cycle. This may not be a serious reason to worry, but, sometimes, bleeding during pregnancy can be a symptom for something severe, so caution is advised. For women with regular menstrual cycle, the menstrual bleeding may occur, if the moment of getting pregnant was close to the date of the next cycle. Another cause that can be held responsible for bleeding during pregnancy is ectopic pregnancy. It may look like a menstrual flow, but the condition is not to be neglected. As third quarters of all the pregnancies end in miscarriages, before even the woman feels that she is pregnant, it is not unusual to experience menstrual bleeding during this period. But, if you were told that you were pregnant, and you experience pains in the belly, accompanied by bleeding, than this is a sign of miscarriage. To avoid the risk of ectopic pregnancy, go see your doctor and ask them what to do. If this event occurs during the first trimester of the pregnancy, you will not be able to do anything to save the pregnancy.


Bleeding can also occur during the implantation phase. As the fertilized egg gets into the uterine lining, menstrual flow may appear. Actually, the causes are not established yet, even if many women report bleeding during their normal period time, or spotting, in the early stages of pregnancy.


Some serious problems may be at the origin of menstruation during pregnancy. If the bleeding occurs later in pregnancy, then that could be the result of placental problems. Placenta previa and placenta abruption are the most known placental problems, and a normal symptom is this type of bleeding. In placenta previa, the placenta covers the cervix, which will prevent the baby from coming out when the right time comes. Placenta abruption represents the condition in which the placenta gets off the uterine wall before the time of birth has come.
