Metal Halide Lamps - The Fastest Growing Light Source

One of the fastest growling light sources in the USA are metal halide lamps. In the past few years they've been revolutionized and improved which has brought these lights front and center.

Pulse start technology as well as advancements in the ballast designs has resulted in the ability to choose from a variety of different lamp types for all kinds of applications from task lighting to ambiance, and thus the growth in demand. There are some beautiful styles to choose from and there certainly is a style for any room.

So what makes metal halide lamps so popular?

1. Efficiency
These lamps are very efficient and they are a compact source of white light. Mercury lamps and high pressure sodium lamps don't have a lot of color choice so there isn't a lot of choice in the quality of light either.

But the metal halide is available in a variety of different color temperatures to meet the different needs of different users which is the number one reason that sales are on the rise.

2. Versatile
There are now more than 400 styles to choose from for both commercial and residential settings.

3. Colors
These lamps can be made to produce light from 2700K to 20,000K and they also offer excellent CRI of 65 to 85. Specific colors can be produced for specialty lighting. What's very unique is there is no gel or filtration used in generating color.

4. Ecology
Power usage has always been a balancing act between production and protecting the environment. The Metal halide provides at least a bit of a solution since it could cut energy consumption in the US by as much as 10% which could reduce fossil fuel consumption and reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and other pollutants. These lamps provide 45x the lumen hours than their incandescent counterparts do.

Traditional incandescent lamps that produce white hot tungsten are pretty straight forward to understand because you can actually see what's going on. But Metal Halide isn't that simple. In fact it's quite a complex process.

Metal halide lighting has been used in aquarium and reef lighting for quite some time. In fact it's the best option on the market still today featuring much hirer photsythetically available radiation than other options.

There are two electrodes in a mix of chemicals which produce the color spectrum. The spectrum is not smooth but instead spiky with each representing a specific compound that's being emitted.

The compounds of Metal Halide include salts from rare earths, halides, and mercury. It's a chemical balance that's very delicate and any chance in that balance results in a different color perception.

You can purchase metal halides online. They are available from 50W to 1000W and in a variety of styles for different light fixtures. Pricing is very competitive and shipping is generally with 24 hours if lamps are in stock.

The future of metal halide lamps is promising as demand continues to grow for both home and business uses. Its certainly worth considering as an option for your lighting needs.
