You've got the bike and it's real nice! You've got the helmet to protect your noggin. Now all you need is the right clothing. Believe it or not the clothing you purchase is as important as the motorcycle and helmet. Whether you ride casually, long distance, or race you need the right clothing for the ride. With out it you could find yourself with cuts, scrapes and abrasions. There is nothing worse than a motorcycle rider riding down the road in a t-shirt, cutoffs and a pair of sandals. It might look cool but it's not real smart! Yet no matter were you go you can spot them. On the back of the bike is the girl friend with a halter top cutoffs and thongs on her feet. If you ever take a fall while riding with this attire on you have no protection and you are going to wish you had. Many people have had unnecessary injuries because they were not wearing the right type of clothing. Sliding down the road on your back after you and your passenger have been thrown from your motorcycle because you hit loose sand on a corner is not a pleasant experience! You can not imagine the level of pain you will endure as your flimsy shirt along with your skin and flesh are peeled from your body. as you slide down the pavement. The medical costs far out way the 400 to 500 hundred dollars you saved by not purchasing proper motorcycle clothes. The first thing on your list is a good full face helmet. Be sure the face cover is removable and not just the flip up type. Make sure the helmet is properly approved. Some of the cheaper over seas helmets are not properly tested. and do not have the proper safety stickers on them. Be sure to check! Make sure the helmet fits your head properly. Never buy a used helmet as you do not now any thing about its condition. You will need an all round good abrasion resistant jacket. It should have an outer shell with a removable quilted liner and a fleece lined neck with adjustable waists and cuffs. This is a basic jacket style for general street riding. Riding pants should be comfortable and be abrasion resistant. They should have a flexible elastic waistband with two snap closures and a double flap. The hips should be protected and have removable shaped armor pads. Pre-curved knees will provide greater comfort in the riding position. A nice addition is large zippered cuff openings with flaps and knit stretch panels which allow the pants to be worn over or under the boots. Most riders do not purchase gloves but you should think about doing so because they protect your hands and are recommended. With the advancement in new materials riding gloves can keep your hands cool in the summer and warm in cooler weather. Some have gel inserts to dampen the vibration your hands take while riding. Many are made from kevlar or other ballistic materials with abrasive resistant on the outer shell with comfortable inners. These are great riding gloves! Boots are also very important because they help to protect the foot and ankles. The boot should be flexible in the sole so gear changing is not awkward and still be comfortable to walk in. A graded off trail boot has a stiff sole and offers ankle support which is important. Your boots should also have a breathable waterproof inner layer as this will protect you from rain and keep your feet warm. Riding clothes are the most important investment you will make next to the cost of your motorcycle. Do not go cheap on your riding gear. Think of it as your insurance policy. Although you may never need it you never know when you will. You will suffer far fewer injures and less severe injuries if you are wearing proper motorcycle clothing. Your body will thank you!
