Motorcycles Gaining Popularity

Recent spikes in gas prices and an increased concern aboutclimate change has prompted millions of Americans to look for alternative modesof transportation. For many, this means replacing their “gas guzzlers” withmore fuel-efficient cars, taking public transportation, or carpooling. Thesesame economic and environmental concerns have also caused a steady rise inpopularity of the motorcycle.

Like any other vehicle, miles-per-gallon ratings of anygiven motorcycle vary greatly with the make and model. The vast majority ofmotorcycles get anywhere from 30 to 70 MPG. If the average MPG of a motorcycleis 50, then it is safe to say that the average motorcycle gets twice themileage from a gallon of gas than the average automobile. Buying a motorcyclebegins to make a lot of sense when considering figures like these.

Aside from better fuel efficiency, motorcycles have severaladvantages over cars, trucks, and other passenger vehicles. Here are just afew:

  • Cheaper to buy - Most new and used motorcycles can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of a car or truck. Many used bikes that can handle the demands of the average commuter can be found for $1000 - $2000.
  • Easier to maintain - Compared with a typical automobile, nearly every crucial component of a motorcycle is easily accessible, and therefore easy to repair or replace. Many riders pride themselves on their ability to repair their own bike.
  • Greater maneuverability - Motorcycles are much easier to move in and out of small spaces very quickly, allowing the skilled rider a better chance of evading road hazards and collisions with other vehicles.
  • Easier parking and storage - Finding a parking space for a motorcycle is a breeze. In fact, many cities allow bikes to be parked on the sidewalk. Bikes make a lot of sense to many city-dwellers who have grown accustomed to spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars a month to park their car.

These advantages aside, riding a motorcycle does come withsome very significant risks. Even the best helmets, protective gear, andskilled, defensive riding cannot eliminate the chances that a serious accidentmight occur, causing injury or death.

Motorcycleaccidents are subject to different laws, regulations, and insurance issuesthan passenger vehicles. If you or a loved one has been injured in a motorcycleaccident, it is in your best interest to speak with an experienced motorcycleaccident attorney.
