In the tradition of other area-focused mobile phones, the Motorola E8 ROKR seems to definitely be geared more towards music. Most mobile phone areas already have heavy competition, and musical inclined ones are no different. Thus, the Motorola E8 ROKR had to distinguish itself from its competitors, and it certainly managed to do so. In fact, it is so different in nature that most can't but stop to notice it.

Features of the Motorola E8 ROKR

Crowning all the features that the E8 ROKR offers is its morphing ability. Not only does it affect every aspect of the phone, but it is both visible and intriguing at the same time, bound to perk even the most hardened and sceptical of mobile phone users. For starters, it would be impossible not to notice that, when the Motorola E8 ROKR is first picked up, it has no visible keypad. Instead, where the keypad should be are a series of raised dots that are arranged in 3 parallel columns, sort of like how a keypad should be.

Essentially, this is the morphing keypad of the E8 ROKR. When active in calling mode, the keypad lights up with the customary numbers, whereas, when in music player mode, it only displays music controls. Similarly, in camera mode all those controls related to the camera and galleries come into play. Based on the function, different sets of keys appear and disappear, making for some ease of use.

All the keys themselves use subtle vibrations at the location of the key to let the user know when they have been pressed. Furthermore, the keys feel as though they are being 'pushed in' or 'depressed' which adds to the general feel, although in truth the keys do not move at all. This localised hepatic feedback does take some getting used to.

Also new to the Motorola E8 ROKR is the FastScroll navigation wheel. Any iPod user would recognise it, however it is not a full circle, not really a semi circle, and more strongly resembles a horseshoe. That said, it does pretty much the same thing as one would expect it to, but the absence of a section of the circle sometimes gets in the way a little. For any who find it all too bizarre, there is the more standard four-way directional pad for navigation as well.

Underneath the gloss, the Motorola E8 ROKR offers the usual sort of thing. A 2 megapixel camera produces decent images, a media player that performs quite well especially with the easy-to-use morphed buttons, microSD compatibility for extra storage, 2 GB internal storage, FM radio, and both Bluetooth and USB ready.

Bottom line, the Motorola E8 ROKR is one of those mobile phone deals that is really pushing at the forefront of the interactive interface technology. Such wild changes may not be for everyone, but it is bound to attract any who likes to have at their disposal the very latest piece of equipment that visibly is different from its competitors. Beneath the exterior lies a pretty solid mobile phone, all in all, and the combination of both solid features and futuristic exterior seems to fit well.
