Music In Movies – A Contributing Factor To Success

Music makes a big difference to any movie. Since, it is natural for humans to be attracted to good music, most public shows have many songs and dances. A recording studio has become a necessary destination for all film makers as they try to get the right score for their flick. Since, good music can make a difference between a hit or a miss, no expense is spared in order to get just the right tunes for the motion pictures. In fact some movies are entirely based on songs, and are called musicals. In these, the lyrics of the songs play a significant role in telling the story.

Bollywood films are renowned for their excessive song and dance sequences. Hollywood movies too use orchestral or synthesizer score or even a new hit song to add to the interest of the movie. Sometimes a movie's popularity is increased by its musical score. The Celine Dion song “My heart will go on” for Titanic stayed on in public memory long after the movie left the cinema halls. The soundtrack of Love Story is one of the most enduring ever. Who doesn't download music software to be able to listen to the wonderful hits of the latest blockbusters? Many a times, blockbusters become classics because of their excellent scores. Hence, composers and song writers are in great demand in Hollywood.

Motion picture music can be of many types. One category is that of underscore, a good example of which is E.T.’s excellent background music. The scene where the kids fly on their bicycles becomes more magical thanks to the great score. A second category is original sound recording, for instance, the “Hungry Heart” music of the movie Perfect Storm. The next category is of special song recordings for the films like the unforgettable “Over The Rainbow” song from Wizard of Oz.

Songs are used in movies to show all kinds of emotions. A romantic setting is enhanced by an appropriate love song. Similarly, music has been used to make people laugh and cry. In fact the story itself can be narrated through cleverly inserted songs. Moreover, with a great background score, emotions and dialogs acquire more significance. If a producer wants to use an existing soundtrack for his movie, he can do so by negotiating with the music producer. Often a pre-existing hit song can help create the mood required in the movie. The soundtracks of many movies come out and go on to become huge hits in their own right. These days creating of music for movies might not require elaborate studio equipment as the songs that are already huge hits are often used unchanged.

One can think of many movies which have become classic due to their great score. Phantom of the Opera used the magnificent opera tunes to turn the movie into a masterpiece. Many other movies that could have done without music become better because of it. Haven’t you put on the famous romantic song of Top Gun or the rap tunes of Wild Wild West in your car audio innumerable times?
