What to look out for when shopping online for guitars and other pro audio equipment. Are you taking a chance that the instrument will have the right fit? Unless you have seen the product in person, you may be surprised that it does not even closely resemble the photo in which it was displayed. Most online stores will allow returns if it does not meet your expectations. Read my report from musicians who buy online from Zzounds via the link at the end of this article. Security - Use common sense. Look for company contact information. If the store only lists an email address, you should think twice about buying. You have to ask yourself, "Why are they not listing this information?' You will definitely need this information in the event there is something wrong with the product or purchase. Phoning or faxing the order should also be an option. Just as you would use common sense when giving your credit card information out to a suspicious street vendor, likewise, be cautious when shopping online. Look for sites that do not look thrown together but rather a professionally produced site is a good sign that this vendor is around to stay a while and will honor any purchase guarantees. Look for the name of the store in the domain. Along with spending good money on quality web design, this is also a good indication of stability. Loyal musician shoppers cited convenience, variety and bargains as the three top reasons they bought online. How do the top online musical equipment stores compare? Daren's "Ouch!" Plain Truth Report can help. In general, online shopping contributed significantly to overall 2007 sales by attracting consumers through a broad product selection. According to Nielsen/Net Ratings, once again guitars, electric and acoustic, remained the most popular purchases among musicians, as consumers shelled out $1.8 billion, or 38% of total online sales for instrumental merchandise. Consumers have become accustomed to purchasing musical equipment online over the years and look to the Internet to find comprehensive product information allowing them to have more time to spend on other daily activities. The report also suggests consumers have become more familiar and trusting with their online buying options. Thirty-six percent said avoiding crowds was the primary reason they purchased online, while the same percentage said lower prices were why they beat a path to the computer rather than visiting the physical store. Another 33 percent cited increased product selection. For those musicians or musician wanna bees who are confined to the home, live in rural areas, or just can not find the time to get away, shopping for instruments online seems to be a popular alternative. The survey also showed 37 percent were "very satisfied" with shopping online during the holidays, while 24 percent were "somewhat satisfied." Thirty percent said their online shopping experience had improved over 2006. What is the current consensus of online shoppers for the top online musical equipment stores?
