Nixion - History Behind the Man
|
Career in Congress It was after Nixion was home from the second World War that He was approached by some of the Republicans about running for the House of Representatives at a national level. He decided to do so, and he ran and defeated Jerry Voorhis, who was the incumbent who had served for seven terms already. Later on, in 1950, Nixon would go on to challenge Helen Gahagan Douglas for the race for a senate seat, and he won the seat in the Senate by a landslide. Once he had his seat in Senate, he began to greatly oppose communism, traveling on a regular basis speaking out against this threat. Also, while he was in the Senate, he often was quite critical with the way the Korean War was handled by Harry S. Truman. Serving as Vice President In 1954, Nixion was chosen to be the VP nominee for the Republican party, running with General Dwight D. Eisenhower. They won the election by a large amount of votes, and while he was in the Vice Presidency, he made the office more important and more visible as well. He was also the very first VP that would temporarily step in to run the American government in an unofficial manner, dealing with meetings on National Security when the president was not able to attend. Nixon Becomes President After being the Vice President, Nixion went on to decide to campaign for the job of President of the United States himself. He faced off against John F. Kennedy, although he lost to Kennedy. Then in the 1968 presidential election he decided to try running for President again. He won the nomination of his party and went on to win the presidency as well. However, later he would resign from the Presidency after going through the Watergate Scandal and facing impeachment.
