Old Porsches Never Die

There is no doubt that the Porsche 911 combined with the 356 its predecessor really are where the history of Porsche began. Porsche was well known for its flat 4 and flat 6 engines as well as the rear engine mount and air cooled engines that were used right up to the late 1990s. Porsche did introduce water cooled engines and rear wheel drive from 1975 to 1994 in the 924, 944, and 968 models. These were also there first engines to be front mounted. The 928 also saw the introduction of the V8 in 1977 and it was carried through to 1994. The 911 remained the classic Porsche throughout time. The 911 Turbo offered the four wheel drive and the 959 4WD was introduced as a rally car. Porsche has had many highlights over the years so lets have a look at the history of the Porsche. 1948 - The first Porsche car with a 1086cc 30kW VW engine was registered in Gmund Austria. 1949 - The 356 production was started in Stuttgart Germany 1950 - Porsche builds the Cisitalia racing car with four wheel drive and a 1.5 L flat 12 supercharged engine. 1951 - A light weight 356 runs in the Le-Mans 24 hour race and the first two right hand drive Porches are built which are then imported by Hamilton to Australia. 1953 - The 550 Spyder mid engine race car is created. 1963 - The Porsche 901 which was renamed the 911 later on was first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It had a 2 L flat 6 that was air cooled with 97kW @ 6200 rpm. Later a larger engine was installed. 1964 - 911 production begins. 1969 - The 914 4 cylinder mid engine mount was introduced. This was actually a VW engine and many felt that this was an underpowered engine. 1973 - The 911 G body with 2.7 flat 6 engine and a the prototype 911 Turbo were both introduced and shown at the Paris Motor Show. The whale tail spoiler was also introduced. 1974 - The new 3.0 L .8 bar boost turbo engine is introduced. 1975 - The water cooled 4 cylinder front mount engine is introduced in the 944 and 968 models. 1977 - The 911 has the inter cooled 3.3 L engine that is front mounted. 1981 - The 911 4WD concept car is introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show. 1982 - The new 911 Carrera is introduced to the market. 1984 - A 911 4WD wins the rally at Paris Dakar 1986 - 4WD 959 finishes first, second, and sixth in the Paris Dakar rally. 1987 - The Porsche 959 and 911 are both equipped with 4WD that has settings for ice, wet, and dry roads. ABS is standard equipment and the 2.85 L twin turbo engine is in place. 1992 - The AG takes direct control of Australian Porsche imports. 1993 - The 911 Turbo gets a 3.6L engine. 1995 - The 911 series 993 with twin turbo 6 speed and electronic 4WD is added to the Carrera and Porsche 959. 1996 - The new Boxster is introduced with a mid mount engine and affordable price tag. 1998 - Porsche celebrates their 50th anniversary and there are more than 1 million Porsches on the road.1999 - 911 type 996 with turbo and 4WD hits the market. 2000 to 2006 sees the introduction of some interesting Porsche models.
