There are several approaches to doing business on the world wide web. Each of these ways have both advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the time and resources available to you, picking one or more will work you toward a successful business.

The most common business style is to build a website and sign up for affiliate accounts with merchants that offer products or services that fit your particular niche. Some of the advantages to this sort of affiliate marketing are that you do not have to maintain any inventory of items for sale nor do you have to deal with shipping and handling.

Most affiliate accounts will provide the website owner with pre-made advertisements and usually host these banners as well. On the downside is that the merchant will usually get only a small commission for any sales made and will have to wait until enough have been made to reach a minimum payout. Another problem with affiliate marketing this way is that the tracking cookies placed on potential customers' computers are often deleted if they do not buy on the first visit to the merchant website and thus, if they go back later to buy, the website owner loses that commission entirely.

A variation of this is through context advertising with programs such as Google's Adsense. With these advertisements in place the website owner is paid from a penny or so each time their website user clicks through on the ad to a percentage commission if a sale results from that click. To the downside of this is that you must work hard to build a high ranking website to do enough business through click through ads to make it profitable and that so many people carry these ads, many surfers ignore them completely.

Then there is the area of internet marketing which promotes products, services and programs that promote internet marketing itself. With thousands of newcomers looking to the internet everyday for a means of creating their own business, this can be a very lucrative market. It is much more involved than the other forms of internet marketing. One has to set a network of many diverse parts in place to get the traffic required to promote their product over what can seem to the newcomer as "more of the same". It is very much a system of e-mail advertising to reach new customers. However, once an internet marketer in this field builds a large enough list of interested customers the rewards can be astronomical.

Multi Level Marketing is yet another form of business that has adapted to the internet with a quickness. While it has a greater reach on the world wide web than ever it had when it was door-to-door solicitation for new members, it is still the same basic business. Its payment structure is still a pyramid no matter how they break it into "payment brackets". Those who start an MLM, or can be the first to promote it, will have a good chance of making a decent amount of money on the project. The further it spreads, the less anyone on the far ends of its promotion will see any acceptable results until it collapses on itself and a new one emerges to start the cycle again.
