Contrary to diamonds, rubies and emeralds that are faceted (multi-faced), Onyx is cut as cabochons or beads which are a doom-like shape with flat bottom. Intaglios and cameos are some other shapes for Onyx. Usually, jewelers use black or other dark background with onyx.
In Victorian era, onyx cameos were at their peak particularly in the period that is called “Grand Period" by many jewelry historians. It was also reckoned as an era of mourning because Queen Victoria had to face the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert and jewelry at that time was quite dark and somber in color because of the declared mourning and at that time onyx was particularly preferred because of its contrast with black background.
Similarly, in Rome, the soldiers used to wear amulets that had the engraved name of the God of war or Hercules. They used to believe that these stones were made them strong and fearless and they would fight bravely to their enemies without thinking about retreat or defeat.
Even in this new era, Onyx is quite popular and it is used in a variety of jewelry and decorative items .People that were born in the month of February, Onyx is a birthstone for them and many people still believe even in this age of science and technology that this gemstone has an amazing healing power and can bring good luck and fortune for the people. Many believe it is just an ordinary stone just like any other stone. Who is right and who is not, we don't know about it as it hasn't been decided yet and perhaps it would never be decided.
