Open a Bar - What is Involved?

Owning your own bar may be a dream come true for you. After all they seem to be hot spots for crowds that want to go out and have a good time. Yet there is much more to owning a bar than one might thing. Anyone can open a bar but it takes a good owner to be able to make it successful. Remember that you have plenty of competition out there. What is it that you can offer in order to entice customers to spend their time and money in your bar?

Before you can open a bar you have to be approved for a liquor license. The rules and regulations for them will vary depending on where you reside. You can find the process though online or by contacting your local chamber of commerce. Once you have that liquor license in hand you can start developing a theme for your bar and selecting the right location for it.

You also need to establish a budget for getting your bar open. If you need to finance the establishment you will need to write up a very good business plan. This way you can get a lender to take a chance on your endeavor. If they feel you have the ability and the motivation to do well they will approve your loan application.

There are plenty of supplies to order when you open a bar. It can be hard to determine how much beer you need. It can also be hard to decide what types of liquor to offer to your customers. You will have to learn the basics of ordering as well as keep an eye on the supply and demand for your business. That way you aren't tying up too much of your money in inventory.

You need to hire competent employees for your bar as well. They need to be responsible enough to show up for their shifts. You need waitresses that work fast and under pressure. You need bartenders that know how to make just about any drink under the sun. You also need great security in place so that everything can remain under control. In most states it is mandatory for law enforcement to be called any time that a fight breaks out in the establishment.

While you can make a great deal of money when you open a bar, there is plenty of overhead as well. You need to do your best to keep cost low and your profits coming in. There is a great deal of responsibility as well when it comes to opening a bar. You need to train employees to be able to turn away those that have had enough to drink. You also need to make sure everyone has proper ID. It only takes serving one underage person for your liquor license to be suspended.
