Organisations providing contract sales for jobs in pharmaceuticals

In those days I'd not long started out in the pharmaceutical industry but you wouldn't have associated contract employment with jobs in pharmaceuticals to any great extent.

There has been explosion in the contract sales industry during the last decade and it now regularly supplies workers in medical sales to pharmaceutical companies under contract agreements. As a result nowadays you will find that a significant portion of medical sales workers are indeed contracted and the number of these keeps growing year after year. Contract positions within companies can come in a number of guises.

I.As cover - temporarily replacing a member of staff who is off work due to sickness or on maternity leave.
II.As a 'float; - part of a team of reps who fill in for others or are an addition to a team when it proves necessary
III.As an 'early' sales rep. Brought in to work on a sales operation in its initial stages. By putting together a special team for the project the company doesn't have to take on extra permanent staff although it may well add the team to its headcount once the product has become well established.

IV.As a 'try out'. A company might take someone on board in a pharmaceutical job for maybe 6 months to try them out in the role. This provides a useful way of recruiting without going through the full process.

This is how it works. An external agency hires workers on a short term contract on behalf of the pharmaceutical company. When the contract period reaches an end the company has the option to keep them - this could be by offering an extension of the contract or a permanent position - or it can choose to release them

Are there concerns over security when you take on a contract medical sales role? This is a point those working in pharmaceutical sales often raise. If you consider the contract as an individual factor then it's my belief that it doesn't make the position any more in secure. You need to look to other features of the position to decide on its job security. For instance if as in example 3 you are hired early on in a sales promotion you are well aware that if the product is unsuccessful there is no chance of a permanent position being offered. By the same token if you are engaged to try out the role only your performance can dictate the jobs security. Think of it in the same way as completing a period of probation, you will only be kept on if you prove your worth so the onus is on you to deliver what is required!

When contract sales roles first began to appear in the pharmaceuticals industry they weren't regarded very seriously but times have changed. Nowadays companies such as Takeda are able to hire top of the league people, offering them the highest number of permanent contracts in the pharmaceuticals industry. Meda is another company that is forging a reputation for itself in contract sales with its approach to hiring the best people out there using the try it out approach.

There is little doubt that high calibre contract sales teams will feature prominently in up and coming companies. It's important to look in detail at companies advertising vacancies that are of interest to you its also important not to view contract roles in a negative manner. There is already a trend for some of the most highly paid positions to be contract roles and this is bound to continue.
