AIT tape format has the technology of ALDC (Adaptive Loss less Data Compression) that helps the AIT format to provide enhanced performance, capacity, and robustness. The other technology that increases the rate of data search is the MIC Memory in Cassette. MIC gives higher intelligence to the combination of media & tape drive via auxiliary chip. This chip is actually flash memory and is incorporated in the tape cassette. MIC has the key parameters like the search map, tape log and the information of the application that helps the users by offering them flexible management (media & media contents). The design of the tape media and tape drive enhances its useful life. AIT has the recording method of “helical scan" that uses the AME media which has magnetization layer of pure metal and protective coating of DLC (diamond like carbon). That is why the recording density of AIT tape format is very high.
The media life of AIT is enhanced because the tape tension is low along with gentle media handling over the heads. The helical scan does not need quick tape speed. AIT tape format provides higher efficiency over host rates of wide range. In Helical scan method there is no requirement of linear technology to move the tape forth & back hundreds of time (serpentine) for filling data in cartridge. Instead for reading & writing the cassette it utilizes one pass which is from end to the other end. Tape drives of AIT 1 & AIT 2 have demonstrated 300,000 hours (reliability specification) at duty cycle of 100 percent.
AIT-1 tape format offers 35 GB (native) and 90 GB (compressed) recording capacity. It provides of 4 MB/s of native transfer speed and compressed rate of 10 MB/s with interface of ultra SCSI LVD. AIT1 tape format is entry point in family of AIT and it also provide the users of DDS an opportunity to migrate who need higher performance and recording capacity. The investment of the customer is provided highest level of protection by the AIT-1 tape format. The other versions of AIT family AIT 2 & AIT-3 can write and read the media that is recorded by first generation AIT-1 tape drive. The AIT-2 backup tape format maintained the innovative form factor of 3.5 inches. AIT-2 tape format's data speed and recording capacity was increased through the new advanced data recording heads, media formulation and channel coding.
AIT-2 is completely backward compatible to the AIT-1 tape format and transfer rate is 6 MB/sec (compressed 15 MB/sec) while writing or reading native capacity of 50 GB (compressed 130 GB). AIT-2 data tape format was introduced in early 1999 and since then has provided high level performance for the applications of mid-range. AIT-2 format has been mostly utilized in tape automation and has proved through its performance that it has the ability and technology to operate efficiently in environments with high duty cycle.
