PDA: Personal Digital Assistant
|
PDAs come in various screens such as colour and just monochrome. And it is also obvious that the colour screens will cost more than just a monochrome screen. The ability of the screen should be one of the first factors in deciding on what PDA you plan on buying. Some of the advantages that colour screens brings to the users is that the display is much clearer and the ability to view the screen in environments with dim or no lighting at all. While monochrome screens will be rendered useless in the dark since it does not come with a black light in the backdrop. One of the biggest disadvantages is the battery life will be greatly reduced since the colour screen will be using up a lot of power. Compared to the monochrome screens, colour only lasts maximum a couple of days while monochrome can last up to almost a month on a regular use basis. The amount of memory that you are hoping to have at all times must be considered when purchasing your PDA. Palm OS usually comes with less memory than Pocket PC devices. With Palm OS generally equipped with 8 MB and Pocket PC devices with 32 MB, it may not be enough for all users. If you are planning to use your PDA as a media player as well may require more memory. It is important to make sure your PDA is capable of adding more memory if needed. Most PDAs uses the same type of removable memory as digital camera such as flash memory cards. PDAs generally don't need a huge amount of memory like desktops and laptops since its main purpose is very minor compared to the two. There are over 7,000 programs designed for the PDA. With majority of the program made for the Palm OS since it has been around longer than the Pocket PC device. Even though Pocket PC device may not have as much programs as the Palm OS, it still has an advantage because of their close relationship with the Microsoft since they use Windows Mobile. PDAs that are Pocket PC device will be more compatible when it wants to use programs such as Microsoft Word or Excel with a desktop. So when you know what kind of software you want to use, the next question is really which of type of PDA devices is capable of running the software. But currently the advantage is still with the Palm OS platforms since there are more programs designed for it. PDAs' speed can range differently depending on the platform and model. If you want faster response time then the Palm OS system would have the quickest response time out of the two PDA platforms. The reason for the faster speed is because of its operating system, the Palm OS uses a rather simple operating system and since it is monochrome it does not need to process colour. While the Pocket PC device is packed with the burden of processing colour and is very graphic intensive. But the technology of the entire PDA is advancing at a great pace, especially for the platform of Pocket PC device which means as times pass the speed of Pocket PC will be much faster and may overtake Palm OS. The price of PDAs can range anywhere from $50 all the way up to $1000. And depending on what you have decided you need for your PDA, so will the price be for it. Depending on the size, screen function, memory and the other features the price will increase as you want more of each of those functions. Because the Palm OS tend to be in the lower end of the price range, it is why it is only in monochrome and memory is often limited. While Pocket PC device can be from anywhere $300 all the way up to $1000. That is because of the colour screen, memory, and the additional features that come with this PDA platform. Knowing what you are willing to spend is important to knowing what you can get from your PDA. About The Author: Jason Petrina is the Editor and Publisher of Article Click.
