Painting Plastic - Tips for Doing a Great Job

Planning to paint something that is made of plastic? Well, when it comes to painting plastic, there are some special considerations that you have to keep in mind. You'll find that painting something that is made of plastic quite a bit different than painting other types of materials. So, here are a few painting plastic tips that can be a huge help.

Tip #1 - Don't Rush - First of all, when you are painting plastic, you need to remember that you should not rush the paint job. When you begin rushing the painting, you are more likely to make mistakes. It takes a bit more to paint plastic than it does to paint various other materials, so just be willing to take your time and avoid getting in a big rush.

Tip #2 - Wash the Plastic - When it comes to painting plastic tips, before you even begin the painting, it is very important that you wash the plastic. Use soapy water that is warm and consider adding in some solvent based cleaner as well, but do make sure that you wear some gloves to keep your hands protected. This is an important step that will help you to paint the plastic.

Tip #3 - Plastic Primer is Essential - When you're painting plastic, using some plastic primer on the plastic is essential before you begin painting it. The primer helps to prepare the surface for the paint. Since plastic is so slippery, the paint could easily just slip off, so using the primer is definitely important if you want a nice paint job.

Tip #4 - Scuff Up the Plastic - Another thing that can help you to make sure that the paint stays on the plastic is to scuff off the plastic before you begin to paint. Using a scotchbrite pad can really help or even using wet dry paper that is 1500 grit can be helpful as well. It scuffs up the plastic, allowing there to be more for the primer and the paint to grab on to when you are painting plastic.

Tip #5 - Allow 5 Minutes Between Each Coat - Last of all, another of the important painting plastic tips is to allow at least five minutes between each coat if you are using spray paint. If you are using another type of paint, you may need to allow longer for drying. You need to make sure that every coat dries before you try applying a new coat of the paint.
