Many people seem to be confused on exactly what is cyberbullying? What it is posting of text or images on the internet with the sole purpose of hurting or embarrassing someone else. It is only considered cyberbullying if it is two children involved. If there is an adult involved it is considered cyber harassment or cyber stalking. Many teens think this bullying or harassing is no big deal, but it is a big deal. Children have committed suicide or killed each other after being involved in a cyberbullying incident.
There are many different ways in which cyberbullying can occur. Someone can pretend to be someone else to trick the victim. Someone can use the internet to spread lies and rumors about another or trick someone into revealing personal information. Another thing that a cyberbully might do is send mean or threatening text or post pictures of someone that is humiliating.
What a teen can do to avoid cyberbullying never forward mean or embarrassing text or pictures. Never post personal information on the internet. Never share your internet passwords with anyone with the exception of your parents. If you think that someone is cyberbullying or being cyberbullied do not remain silent. You must speak out and do not participate in these actions. If you do not allow cyberbullies to threaten and humiliate others it will begin to stop. Remember for the victim it is a big deal.
If you are a parent of a tween or teen it is very important to communicate with them about internet safety and gives them rules which you expect your child to follow while using the internet. This is a little bit of a touchy subject for some but I recommend using internet monitoring software to monitor what you kid is doing online. A lot of time kids won't say anything out of fear or embarrassment and internet monitoring software is a good option to make sure your child is not being cyberbullied or cyberbullying another.
As you can see that cyberbullying is a big deal and children are getting hurt both physically and emotionally because of this. The time has come to put an end to cyberbullying. Internet monitoring software will allow you to have a parental control computer to make sure your child is safe online. The quicker people realize that this is a big problem will begin to help the problem. It's the lack of awareness that has let this problem continue to grow.
