In order to get the very best results you need to sand down the area. Make sure you do a few inches all around the damaged location on the wall as well. Too many people feel that the area doesn't need to be sanded and so they don't do it. Yet this is a vital mistake that will lessen the quality of your completed drywall project. This sanding process will offer a good foundation for the joint compound to adhere to.
You want to use a very coarse grade of sandpaper. You can sand the area by hand or you can use a power sander. It will likely depend on how large of an area of the drywall that you need to patch up. After you have sanded it, use a clean rag to wipe the area clean. You don't want any grains to be left over that will get mixed into the joint compound. You want to spread it on evenly at least 1/8" thick. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.
You will want to apply a second coat after that time frame has passed. If you are patching a very large hole you will want to apply tape to the first coat of the joint compound after you apply it. Then when you are ready to apply the second coat just put it on top of the tape. Allow that second coat to dry for 24 hours as well. You will want to sand it again so that everything is smooth.
Next you need to wipe the area down with a clean dry towel. That way you can prime it and then paint it. You may need to apply a second coat of paint after the first one completely dries. If you take the time to do this process correctly without cutting corners you will end up with a very good patch job for the drywall.
After you have repaired the drywall you need to take some preventative action. For example if you find the areas behind doors are prone to dents due to the doors hitting them you can place stoppers there. Look for other areas where your drywall takes a beating so you can protect it from any further damages.
