Paul McCartney 2009 Concert Review
|
For people who do not know, the Beatles were the 1st band to perform in a massive sports stadium. It was in the summertime of '65 at the New York Mets Shea Stadium. Naturally nowadays massive shows in sports complexes happen every day. But, in those days the leading-edge Beatles actually sang through the stadium's P.A. statement system (At bat The Beatles ECHO Echo echo ). The first Band's set list was just twelve songs long and could hardly be heard by the thousands of howling girls in the ballpark ( Alright, there were a bunch hollering dudes too. ) My Wife and I were actually wed at the historic 1960s World's Fair building right where the Fab Four's copter landed after their Shea Stadium concert. We had our smorgasboard on the same rooftop where the Fab 4 made their quick escape decades before. The building had a heliport on the rooftop which is now a big patio with a fantastic view of NYC. I'm sure nobody who celebrates their event there has any clue of the history. For some reason that I can't fathom, they tore down Shea last year and built a new stadium right next to it. As a tribute to the Beatles, Paul was invited to be the first to have a concert the new Mets Ballpark. Paul had made a guest showing when Billy Joel performed the last concert of Shea Stadium in 2008. I happened to be going back home from the airport right when Paul's limousine exited Shea Stadium and I drove next to the car for while as Paul McCartney was taken home with a large security escort to the Hamptons. Paul McCartney gave back the favor to Billy by having him as a guest on the first evening of the new ballpark. Paul's voice was the best I have heard it in the 3 shows I have seen him. At 67, Paul's vocals are still as robust as it was in his 20's ( even if he had a bad hair day in the foggy NY weather ). You can see in these video highlights how much joy Paul McCartney was having... My favorite part of the show was when Paul paid respect to his recently deceased bandmate George Harrison. Paul McCartney played George Harrison's song 'Something' on a ukulele which George Harrison had given him. As in the Concert for George Harrison DVD concert, the whole band joins in and they switch into the original version with footage of George Harrison behind the group. It was a very emotional point when Paul McCartney swung around at the end of the tribute and lifted two peace signs to the big picture of George Harrison being projected behind Paul.
