A pimple is caused by a blockage of the oily glands that exist in our skin. If the pore that lets the skin breathe is blocked, then a small inflammation occurs, and what we see is the pimple.
Under these circumstances, people need to understand that pimples can occur clearly anywhere on the body, including the intimate parts. As studies show, most men experience having pimples on their penises or testicles at some point in their life, but mostly while they are teenagers. So, the condition is quite normal. What is not so normal is when lumps or bumps that are bigger do not disappear in time; in such cases, a doctor should be consulted as this can be the sign of a serious condition.
A pimple on penis must not be a sign of alarm. If the pimple is small in size and it looks exactly like a pimple and nothing else, then it is a pimple. It is not advisable to pick on them, as the glands there are very delicate. In teenagers, such pimples appear on the area of the foreskin that is being pulled back. Many times, after masturbation or sex, the foreskin can get and inflammation, and it is caused by a temporary blockage in the lymphatic channels, but that fades away quite quickly, being a natural effect.
Some types of pimples are not normal, though.
If an ulcer is noticed on the mentioned areas, then the affected individual must seek medical advice right away. An ulcer has pus in its crater and its surface is crust. Usually, this is a sign of genital herpes, infection or a virus.
Another type of pimples that must trigger the alarm are papules. This are raised lumps, that usually are less than one centimeter. They may be harmless, but they can also be the sign of an infection. They are four types of papules: molluscum contagiosum, which is caused by a virus, fordyce spots, that are red or purple, but without any risks for health, genital warts, caused by viruses, and hair follicles that are just normal.
Plaques can be noticed on the skin of the intimate parts, too. They may not always be infectious, but, when they are, they can lead to the appearance of some serious conditions, like Erythroplasia of Queyrat, that is interpreted as an early sign of penile cancer (case in which the excision of the area solves the problem), or balanitis xerotica obliterans, in which the foreskin becomes white and firm. The latter can also be a sign of cancer, but rarely. Some medical care is advised.
You should not be alarmed if you notice chicken skin, or yellowish pimples, or some red blisters. These are normal and they do not represent a threat to one's health.
On the other hand, go see the doctor, if you notice genital warts, or swelling of veins, or lumps in the testicles.
The best thing you can do when you discover a pimple on penis is to avoid squeezing it as this will only let the infection to spread on the skin, in other areas. Cleaning the skin with some neutral soap will do, but without exaggeration. Swelling can be reduced with a little ice pack in the spot. In cases that seem to not back down after many days, it is needed to seek the advice of a dermatologist.
