Periodontis - Ways to Prevent it

When it comes to taking care of your teeth, one thing that you really want to work on is preventing the gum disease periodontis. This disease is present when pockets are formed in the gums close to the teeth that harbor infection. The gums can become very tender and sore, and more often than not you are going to need to see a dentist to correct the problem. Periodontis is not cured easily; treatment can be painful and costly. For this reason, you should try your best to prevent it. Here is some useful advice on prevention.

• Toothbrush and brushing - A lot of people don't give much thought to the toothbrush they use, but it can make a difference in the prevention of periodontis. There is never a reason to use a toothbrush with hard bristles; they are damaging to the gums. You want a toothbrush with soft bristles, and you want to make sure that when you brush you do it correctly. Brush up and down, and back and forth, and clean every part of your teeth. Also, gently massage your gums to clean them and promote good circulation. Floss your teeth every day as part of your home dental care.

• Diet matters - When you eat more fruits and vegetables and get plenty of lean protein, you are not only being nice to your teeth, but you are also preventing periodontis from the inside. Eating a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and greens helps boost your immune system, which can guard against all kinds of diseases.

• Take vitamins - No matter how hard we try to get all of our nutrients from our food, it can help to take extra vitamins. You need calcium and vitamin D to help keep your teeth strong, and vitamin C for healthy gum tissue. Healthy gum tissue reduces your chances of getting periodontis.

There are also some natural substances that can help prevent periodontis, such as CoQ10, a strong antioxidant that may help reduce gum infection. Cranberries actually seem to keep bacteria from adhering to teeth and gums, and grapefruit seed extract acts as a natural antibiotic. There are many things that you can do to prevent this gum disease; all it takes is some discipline and adherence to certain regimens. Try to always keep abreast of new natural preventative substances that you can try, and brush regularly. By doing this, you should be able to keep this disease at bay.
