A very simple permanent marker remover trick is to scribble over the permanent marker with a dry erase marker. When you wipe it away all of the permanent marker will be removed as well. You may have to repeat the process a couple of times to get all traces of it completely removed. This same process can be incorporated if you are working on a smooth surface as well. Some people find a regular pencil eraser also helps them to accomplish removing permanent marker.
You can also use WD-40 as permanent marker remover. This works best if you use it right after it has happened. You do need to be careful though as you don't want to apply it to your walls. It can cause the paint underneath to be rubbed off as well. If you don't have WD-40 you can also use Lysol. Just spray it on the area and it should allow you to wipe it off. This type of permanent marker removal isn't going remove your paint or damage wood either. You may have to spray the area several times before it will all be removed though.
For wood and for paint such as outside of the home you can try to cover the area with toothpaste. Then you should be able to easily wipe it off. Rubbing alcohol can also be used without damaging the surface. The key to successful permanent marker removal is to try many different things until you find the one that does work well for you. Since surfaces are all different you won't know until you try which one gets you the best results.
For linoleum floors and countertops you can try Mr. Clean dry erase marker. You want to scrub gently but not too harshly. You can help to loosen up the stains underneath by applying a thin layer of 409 cleaner. Let it sit for a few minutes before you start to wipe it away. The sooner you work to remove the permanent marker the easier it will be to successfully get rid of it.
Now that you know about permanent marker removal you don't have to worry about the misuse of it so much. Many parents panic when their child gets a hold of such a writing utensil. You can now clean it up successfully and hopefully even laugh about it later on.
