Photo engraving has been around for a very long time. After all it was the most common method of printing illustrations for both newspapers and books. If you are not familiar with engraving it is when lines and grooves etched into a hard surface which is called engraving. Art prints were also created using this method. You've likely seen some of the old etchings from the turn of the century. It is sometimes called photo chemical milling or photoengraving. The most common form of engraving involves the use of a photosensitive etching compound that is not photosensitive. The photo resist is developed by washing an acid bath through it which removes any particles which have not yet hardened exposing parts of the metal. Photo lithography is probably a term you are familiar with. It is a process that is used to make prints off of an original art pieces. The process is widely used even today and it certainly goes back to before the turn of the century. There are different types of engraving which use different types of metal plates to achieve their process. Zinc and magnesium where commonly used with a nitric acid mixture that was splashed over the plates. But things they are a changing. Although there is no reason why this method could not be used still today more modern processes have taken over for the most part. It's really quite interesting to take a little time and find out where photo engraving once was and where it is now. By following the chain of events you will get a much better understanding of engraving and the pros and cons of the modern day engraving compare to the older versions. Engraving is used for a lot more than photo engravings. Jewelry is commonly engraved with loving messages or forget me knots. Rings, lockers, necklaces, and bracelets are often engraved. Trinkets and souvenirs are engraved regularly and gifts of different shapes and sizes are engraved all the time. And then there are those more industrial or commercial orders that require larger quantities. Do you need name tags? Or how about electrical tag warning?
