Plan For Your Retirement With Pension Funds

Retirement sneaks up faster than we might think. What kind of retirement will you have? Do you have a have a pension fund to help you maintain your current standard of living? With all the problems the governments are having and the cost of inflation will there be a government pension for you when you retire? Perhaps it’s time to look out for yourself.

If you started to invest in a company pension plan when you were younger you will have a pension but how much of the pension will be available to you. Some pensions have a fixed rate set out in advance that you will receive. Others do not. The changes over the last 20 years has shown that a lot of the pensions that were invested in when we were younger may not be around by the time we retire.

There is speculation that even the government run pension funds may not be around for you when you retire. The amount of people entering the work force and paying into the pension plan has dropped off dramatically over the last ten years. With fewer people putting money in and more people retiring the pension fund is struggling to survive.

Your smartest move is to invest in an independent RRSP which ensures the money will be there for you when you retire. You should play an active role in the managing of your pension fund. Do not let pension fund managers solely invest for you. If you do not understand what the investments are and what the rises are learn and find out. These are your funds and you need to be sure they are being correctly invested.

We all remember the dot com bust where stocks in companies imploded and many investors saw their investment folders go from good looking to flat nothing. With all the changes in the economy that happen all over the world you can go flat broke very quickly. A disaster in one part of the world can greatly affect you monthly dividend checks.

Let’s face it after 911 the stock market suffered dramatically. Some of the stocks and pension funds literally fell off the map. As with the dot com bubble things went from bad to worse as some companies watched their hundred and fifty dollar stocks tumble to the 8 to 10 dollar mark. Many of these stocks still have not recovered even ten per cent of there former value.

The stock market has begun to slowly recover but the war in Iraq has lead to more uncertainty in the market. Then there was the Enron scandal which hit all the markets very hard. Next there were problems that came along was the mass increase of materials to China and India. With the demand there economies have placed on the world economy we find that basic metals, oil and gas are being affected. The upsurge of the new economies of these two countries has driven prices up on base materials because of short supply.

The damage down to the USA from a category 5 hurricane has increased gas as of today to almost double. The damage caused by this weather disaster will affect the economy of the US for years to come and it will also affect the stock market. You see even a rich country can be struck down with a storm. You must keep you finger on the pulse of you investments.

If you held oil and gas stock before this disaster then you will have to watch them closely. As the oil and gas boom of today may not last for very long. But then again who knows.

You need to take responsibility for your own retirement. Do not count on government pensions to be there for you. Rather invest a little at a time wisely into RRSP funds and prepare for your own retirement years so that you know you will be able to maintain the lifestyle you are accustomed to.
