Playing Golf In The Rain?

Playing golf on a wet course is tougher than you might expect. In many aspects, it is like driving your car on wet tarmac. The physics change and the movements become less predictable. With golf, a ball that you think is going too fast might stop a lot earlier then anticipated, because of the wet grass. On a dry golf course, you can pretty much learn from your own mistakes, as the changing variables of the game are low and noticeable. On rainy golf courses the ball will have a mind of its own and you may get some surprises with your shots.

One of the hardest things to do on a wet golf course is to make good putts. Long shots might work well, even though this will also depend on rain intensity. Putts, however, become twice as hard to make, when compared to dry golf courses. Even on golf fields that offer excellent water drainage, you have to realize that this process doesn’t happen instantly. On heavy rain, drainage will be reduced and the whole golf course will feel like a huge wet sponge. Making the putt requires a lot of concentration even on dry weather, so never loose focus of the golf ball’s trajectory while it is raining.

Ball speed is important; however, the level of control you have over it is one of the golf elements that can make the difference between a rookie and a professional golfer. It takes time to learn how to put the ball on the desired track and it takes even more time to learn how to do that properly on a wet course. When making long and medium shots, try to lift the ball as much as possible in the air. The extra arch will ensure that the golf ball will stay in the landing area and it will not bounce away.

A bouncy golf ball is the last thing you want to have on a wet golf course. However, if you give the golf ball enough uplift, it will make a close to vertical descent and often freeze in the position it lands on, because of the cushion effect that the wet ground creates. Wet golf courses often increase the frequency of fairways, as they are softer. This prevents tight or left center drives from ending up in the rough. However, except for increased ground contact difficulty, there is also the changing density of the air the golf ball travels through.

While wind and warm or cold air currents can change the trajectory of a flying ball in dry weather, rain has its own bag of tricks that need to be learned. The direction and strength of the wind should become even more important and you might have to wait for a few minutes and let the wind die off, especially if it is blowing too hard. The drop size is also an element with noticeable effects on the ball’s trajectory – smaller rain drops will slow the ball down slightly, while larger ones will slow it down a lot more. Rain direction is also considerable when calculating the ball’s direction.

Golfing in the rain can be a very difficult task at first, but if you have already mastered golfing on a dry golf course, you may want to challenge yourself to mastering golf in the rain. Golfing in the rain isn’t what it’s cracked up to be, but if you are looking for a challenge, you may want to take this one up. Wearing the appropriate and warm clothing is essential because you don’t want to get a cold! Just remember to have fun golfing whether it is raining or sunny.
