Pomchi - A Charming Little Pet

When you are in the market for a puppy you may hear about a dog called a Pomchi. If this breed doesn't sound familiar to you, that is probably because it is not one particular breed but rather a cross between two breeds. As you might be able to discern from its name, a Pomchi is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. This at first may sound a little bizarre, but people who have adopted these little dogs usually have nothing but good things to say about them. Though no dogs should be bred indiscriminately, with responsible breeding this cross breed can be a wonderful pet for a family, a couple, or a single person.

One way to get to know the Pomchi is to learn about the traits of both the Pomeranian and the Chihuahua. Though you can't count on the fact that their offspring will have all the best traits of both dogs, it will still make you more informed about the traits that it does have. Pomeranians are friendly, active dogs that tend to be smart and a bit headstrong. They are almost always good with children if raised properly, and their antics can provide a lot of entertainment. Chihuahuas are cute, friendly, loyal and a bit docile, but they can also tend to be somewhat timid at times. A Pomchi will often be a little more assertive than a Chihuahua, but not quite as hyper as a Pomeranian.

Pomeranians have long, thick hair that needs regular grooming in order to avoid mats. Often the Pomchi will have hair that is not quite as long or thick, so it is easier to maintain. You can't always count on this when you have a real 50/50 puppy, meaning that one parent is pure Pomeranian and the other parent is pure Chihuahua. Often the parents are both already a cross of the two breeds, and by looking at them you can get some idea of how your puppy will look when he is grown. Though this isn't always a sure thing, it is at least a guideline.

Before you adopt a Pomchi, you want to make sure that this is truly the kind of dog that you want. If there are any traits that you don't like about the Pomeranian or the Chihuahua then you probably don't want a dog that is a mixture of both. There are no guarantees that your puppy won't have the traits that you don't like, and it isn't fair to adopt a puppy if you know there is a possibility that you won't want it later. Most people who adopt this cross-breed find them to be delightful companions, though, so it is certainly worth looking into.
