Poor Blood Circulation is Treatable

Poor blood circulation is a common problem that occurs mostly in older individuals. This is due to the fact that most of the causes of poor blood circulation take a long time to develop. The most common cause is the buildup of fatty deposits that eventually cause plaque in the arteries. This can lead to reduced blood flow that can affect every part of the body. For example, if the arms and legs are not getting the proper blood supply people can develop cramps or numbness in their limbs or even more serious problems due to lack of oxygen to the tissues.

In addition, poor blood circulation can cause a loss of oxygen to the brain that can seriously affect brain function. When the heart is not getting an adequate flow of blood people can start suffering from chest pains and high blood pressure. It can also manifest itself in the inability to walk even short distances or do even light exercise without experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath. Other areas of the body that can be significantly affected include the liver and kidneys.

This poor blood circulation can be caused by many factors and most of them are related to things that people do or dont do every day. For example if people are not careful about their diets over long periods of time then they greatly increase their risk of developing poor blood circulation. The problem often occurs if people consume large amounts of foods containing fat. The problems can also occur if people dont get proper exercise. Everyone should engage in some form of exercise at least a few times a week. This will go a long way in preventing the buildup of plaque in the arteries. Smoking can also lead to the problem so stopping it can help.

So, the good news is that poor blood circulation is preventable and if it does occur there are effective treatments. Many of the treatments just involve doctors assisting patients in getting the buildup plaque under control by recommending a good course of diet and exercise. If people are diabetic it is also imperative that they keep their blood sugar under control. There are also some highly effective drugs for treating this condition. If the condition has advanced to the point where medication wont work than it may be necessary to get a vascular surgeon to correct specific arterial problems. As always, prevention is the best policy.
