Popular Bar Drinks: Ingredients and Directions

Whether you are considering a career as a bartender, or you simply entertain frequently, it can be beneficial to understand how to mix some of the most popular drinks. If you are interested in improving your knowledge of drinks for the purpose of becoming a professional bartender, be aware of the fact that popular drinks generally come and go in cycles. Therefore, it's a good idea to obtain a good, solid base knowledge of a number of drinks and update your knowledge on popular drinks on a routine basis. At the current time, some of the most popular drinks served in bars include: Long Island Iced Tea, Cosmopolitan, White Russian, Apple Martini, Mai Tai, Piña Colada and Amaretto Sour.

On the other hand, if you simply want to set up your own personal bar for the purpose of frequent entertaining, you can usually get by less drink knowledge. Keep in mind; however, that a well stocked personal bar should contain the elements to make a wide variety of basic drinks. A well stocked personal bar, at a minimum, should include the following drink ingredients: bourbon, brandy, cognac, Triple Sec, Grenadine, Bitters, Crème de Menthe, Gin, Kahlúa, Rum, Tequila, dry Vermouth, Vodka and several types of whiskey including Rye, Scotch, Irish and blended. If your budget can be stretched, you may also want to include other items such as several types of beer, Bailey's Irish Cream, Absente, a selection of fruit flavored brandies, Midori, several flavors of Schnapps, both red and white wine selections and port. Of course, a complete bar must also contain a variety of mixers, flavorings and garnishes to create a host of different mixed drinks, so be sure to consider the following as well: lemons, limes, lemon and lime juice, cherries, orange juice, salt, pepper, distilled water, tomato juice, club soda, ginger ale, carbonated water, a variety of carbonated sodas, eggs, hot sauce, several types of fruit juices, milk, coffee, heavy cream, green olives, cocktail onions, coffee liqueurs, fresh fruit and ice cream. With these basic ingredients you can create over one hundred drink combinations.

Of course, it can get very expensive very quickly to begin stocking a personal bar, so you may wish to do it in stages. In that case, at a minimum, you should have several types of carbonated soda, fruit juices, beer, wine, a good whiskey, vodka and rum on hand.

If you're not a professional bar tender, certainly no one can expect you to have hundreds of drink recipes memorized, but it can come in handy to be able to mix a few basic drinks by rote memory without the need to refer back to a master drink book. A few of the most popular drinks that you should be able to create when entertaining frequently include: martini, daiquiri, margarita, Collins, highball, sour, spritzer, coller and a rickey. These drink recipes are excellent for beginners because they contain relatively few ingredients. In fact a number of them contain only two ingredients, with differences varying according to the drink preference of your guest. For example, a guest may ask for a Rum Rickey while another may ask for a whiskey Rickey. Both drinks are made with 1 ½ ounces of the guest's preferred liquor and club soda. The same is true of highballs, substituting ginger ale for the club soda.

If you happen to enjoy some of the most popular bar drinks and would like to entertain your friends and family at home with your own versions, then you may wish to set up your own bar inside your living room or possibly even inside a rec room. In order to serve the most popular bar drinks, you will need the following ingredients: tequila, triple sec, light rum, vodka, rum, gin, sour mix, Coca-Cola, sweet and sour, coconut milk, crushed pineapple, lemon juice, lime juice, cherries, powdered sugar and crushed ice. It's also a good idea to make sure you have the right equipment, which should include: blender, drink shaker and various types of bar glasses including Collins and margarita glasses with wide rims.

While favorite bar drinks may vary from one person to the next, some of the most popular bar drinks of all time include the following drinks: Long Island Iced Tea, Margarita, Pina Colada, Mai Tai and Daiquiri.
