Popular Meditation Techniques
|
If you're new to meditation, you may be surprised to learn that there are a wide variety of meditation techniques you can practice. Some of the techniques are more well known than others; however, the sheer diversity of techniques currently practiced around the world will certainly ensure that you find a technique that will suit your needs and interests. Meditation techniques, while varied, do share some similarities. Most are derived from a three step process whose purpose is to bring you to a state of consciousness that is calm, peaceful and clear. In most meditation techniques the first step of meditation involves concentration. This allows you to begin gaining control over your mind, which will then allow you to gain control over your life. Generally, this step begins by concentrating and fixing your mind on one particular subject or object. This idea is to focus your attention solely on this object or subject without any diversion whatsoever. Frequently, the object or subject of your meditation is where many meditation techniques will vary. One of the most well known and popular forms of meditation around the world is known as the Dalai Lama meditation technique. It is so named for the Dalai Lama; the spiritual leader of the people of Tibet. This meditation technique begins like many others, by sitting quietly in a comfortable position, with your eyes closed. The technique proceeds as you visualize yourself as you would appear to others, family, co-workers and friends alike, when you are impatient. Ask yourself what that looks like and how it appears to the others in your life. Now picture yourself as you appear to the others in your life when you exhibit patience. After you have gained a clear mental picture how you appear when you are patient, visualize how you appear to others when you are depressed and then when you are happy. Continue with this meditation technique, visualizing how you appear to others when exhibit both negative and positive emotions; such as jealousy, bigotry, even-tempered, etc. The idea behind this meditation technique is that picturing how you appear to others when you display negative emotions, you will automatically stop displaying those emotions and replace them with more positive behaviors and emotions. This will allow you to continue on a path toward a more peaceful, enlightened life. Another well known meditation technique is known as Om. This meditation technique concentrates on the chanting on a mantra, an element that frequently appears in many meditation techniques. It is believed that the act of chanting a mantra allows you to become one with every individual who has ever chanted that mantra throughout the history of time. From this point you can merge with their essence and become purified and holy. While there are numerous mantras that could be chanted, this particular meditation technique focuses on the mantra Om. It is composed of three letters; A, U and M. Each letter in the mantra has a specific representation. A is associated with the physical world, while U represents dream planes and M represents deep sleep. This mantra can be chanted either aloud or silently. You can also chant it silently while moving your mouth. One of the many advantages to this meditation technique is that it can be performed anywhere, regardless of your current location. In fact, most meditation experts recommend that this mantra be chanted all of the time; preferring the silent method because of its flexibility and the fact that it does not depend on the human voice.
