Porsche Safety Belts On The 356

Porsche is a car with a reputation for its sporty looks, quality build, and safety record but Porsche safety belts were never standard equipment on the 356.

They were an option but seldom did buyers take advantage of them. Of course this was back in the day when the importance of seat belts wasn't really recognized. And surprisingly many of us rode around without seat belts and lived to talk about it. Perhaps luck was on our side.

Today the importance of safety belts is very well documented and thus many 356 owners are opting to install the aftermarket seat belts. It's really quite a simple process and there is really no reason to spend a great deal of time explaining why it is the smart thing to do because I'm sure you already know.

A 3 point harness is far superior to just a lap belt. A 3 point belt helps prevent you from lunging forward and hitting the steering wheel or dashboard in either an accident or sudden stop.

Diest Safety makes a very nice retractable 3 point harness system that is very comfortable. It is also very convenient. If you think you prefer a lap belt step back and picture this.

You're driving down the road chatting it up with your buddy when suddenly you're broadsided. Your last recollection is your buddy's upper body slamming into the dashboard as he suffers a skull fracture. Convinced now? You want a minimum of a 3 point harness and the 4 point shoulder harness is even better!

Although the 4 point is even better I will admit it is a little more difficult to install. But then can you put a price on your safety and the safety of your passengers?

In 1963 all Porsches came to market with a reinforced seat belt mount that also had a rear mount for the shoulder belt even though the seat belts themselves were optional. What this means for you is the installation of new seat belts just got easier even if there were no original seat belts installed.

Something that is important to note. Make sure when you do your install that the mounting hole goes right through the sheet metal of the body. In some of the earlier models the drill holes need a larger washer to reinforce things.

Just because back in the day it was ever so cool to cruise around with the freedom of no seatbelts and no restraints and just because many of us did just that and lived to talk about it doesn't mean that we aren't smarter than that today.

Today anyone who chooses not to use seat belt is rarely respected. After all we all know the importance seat belts play in saving lives. So isn't it time you installed those seat belts?

Porsche safety belts are readily available online and you can save substantially by purchasing from one of the many reputable sites that offer safety equipment for your Porsche. So what are you waiting for?
