Porsche Spoilers - Installing The Rear Spoiler Wall

The 993 Series of Porsches excluding the Turbo cars which have a wing use Porsche spoilers that automatically raise and lower. The spoilers were first introduced back in the 1980s because the aerodynamics produced better cooling.

The spoiler has a plastic piece that is called the rear spoiler wall and it moves the air downward into the engine compartment after the spoiler has raised it. Installing the rear spoiler wall properly is very important.

The rear spoiler is designed so that it can be folded down when it is not deployed and it can be pulled straight across the car when it is extended. You can't really tell if your spoiler wall is damaged, torn, or starting to separate unless you deploy it and then visually inspect it.

Before you begin the install you will need to prepare by raising the spoiler so you have access to the area. Use the center console switch to raise your spoiler about of the way. When it is in the correct position remove the key and start your repair.

Next you will need to remove the grill. It is held in place with 4 Allen head bolts which are located just under the grill piece on both sides of the wing. Remove these and then remove the grill being careful not to scratch your paint.

Now you need to remove the old spoiler wall which is held in place with channels which are located at each end. The attachments are connected to the fixed point with a rubber channel and they can easily be snapped by hand. Note the spoiler's orientation before removing the entire wall.

Inspect the channels to ensure there is no damage and if all is well clean and prepare for reuse. Now it is time to install the new wall.

Connect the bottom portion of the new wall the rubber channel. Attach the rubber channel to the edge of the engine cover. Now it is time to test the rear spoiler wall. Remember the channel runs from side to side so place it behind the 2 dowels.

Reattach the grill to the two front Allen bolts being careful not to scratch the paint. This will leave the back of the grill floating. Now you need to be really patient to accomplish the last part.

Raise the wall and tilt the grill and attach the one side of the channel. Work your way across the grill about one inch at a time. Align as you go along moving from side to side. That's it you are almost done.

Reattach the last two Allen bolts to the raising and lowering mechanism. Be careful and don't use too much force. Gentle does it and they should slide right into the final location. Now snug them down.

Stand back and check the alignment. Put the key back in the ignition and raise the spoiler to the fully extended position checking the alignment. Then all the way to the fully down position again checking the alignment. Make any needed adjustments.

Now the only thing left to do is stand back and admire your work. Porsche spoilers are an important part of the look of your car and you've just revived yours!
