Portable storage

When doing home remodeling projects sometimes the plans call for emptying out a room or two while they are under renovation. Taking the furniture and placing it the other rooms of the house would only make it difficult to move around plus the chances go up of damaging something. Renting a truck and an offsite self storage unit would take extra time, effort, and expenses and damage while in transit but you very well can not just put everything on the front lawn and be done. Until recently, those were just about the only options available for the do-it- yourselfer but now with portable storage those concerns no longer apply.

Instead of cramped living space or the day it would take to move everything offsite you can have a portable storage container brought to the worksite where it can be loaded at will. Many of these portable storage companies also offer the ability to come back and pick up a loaded portable storage container and remove it to their warehouse if space on the worksite is too limited to accommodate the portable storage containers.

Portable storage has many applications because it is a secure and convenient way to store something temporarily. Contractors on construction sites would have a means of locking equipment and building materials while not onsite. Production and entertainment companies can hold events in remote locations without having to shuttle materials and equipment saving both time and money. College students who leave for the summer all at once and in huge masses would benefit from having a portable storage container waiting at the dorm on D-day knowing it would be delivered back in the fall upon their return.

Portable storage is a relative newcomer to the self storage industry and could be said to be in its beginnings. Many of the delivery systems for the portable storage companies are patented allowing for some to have a competitive advantage. There are negatives too including no interchangeability between equipment that could add to expenses especially for an acquisition or merger. Limited delivery ranges, marketing areas, fuel and fleet maintenance, and complying with state, federal, and D.O.T. regulations are other challenging logistics that portable storage has to contend with that traditional self storage facilities do not.

Operating costs for portable storage however do not always translate in to higher prices than its older established self storage cousin. Many portable storage companies are willing to sacrifice profit margins in order to introduce the public to their services and gain a foothold. Sometimes it all becomes a matter of fit for the consumer, you certainly cannot store your custom auto in a portable storage container nor can you bring the construction site to the self storage facility. Knowing the application that best suits what you are storing and where you are storing should dictate which is better in the long run in terms of costs and time spent.

Starting or investing in a portable storage business today, while good territories are still open and the concept is a fresh and wise idea. Many franchise opportunities exist as well as established businesses looking for investors. Traditional self storage operators would benefit with this ground floor approach and use portable storage to compliment existing lines. Portable storage and traditional self storage can exist and compliment each other offering consumers all varieties of storage, having those options consumers do benefit.
