Potty Training Dogs

Having a new puppy can be plenty of fun, but there is work involved as well. Potty training dogs doesn't have to be a nightmare though if you are consistent about it. Some breeds of dogs are harder than others though so if this is a concern for you, find out about the breed you are considering before you bring the puppy home. Potty training for dogs needs to be done as soon as you can. Otherwise they are already picking up bad habits.

When it comes to potty training dogs, stay as positive as you can about the experience. Don't hit your dog or punish it in other ways when it has an accident. If you aren't around it is even worse as the dog won't make the connection about what they did wrong and why they are being punished. Consistency on your part is going to make the entire process smoother for both of you.

Find ways to reinforce the positive behaviors you want from them. Potty training for dogs is easier when you do so because they are usually quite eager to please. If you have an indoor dog, take it out after each meal. Make sure you take it outside every couple of hours as well even during the night to take care of business. Take your dog to the same location each time too so that they get the idea.

Should you see your dog in action in the house, pick it up and take it immediately out to that spot. Clean up the reminders of the mess right away too. When your dog is able to smell the remains of it they will be inclined to mark that same location again. If you have an indoor dog, you can paper train it on newspaper or puppy pads as well.

Crate training is a very humane and simple method for potty training dogs. It works well when you can't be home all day long with the new puppy. Make sure the dog gets used to the kennel too. Then take it outside before you leave for work. The dog isn't going to use the kennel as a bathroom due to that being where they are residing. Then you can take them out again once you return home.

Outdoor dogs may seem easier but make sure you potty train them as well. This type of potty training for dogs is often about getting them to use the bathroom in one area. You certainly don't want them doing such business all over your yard even if they have free reign of it. One easy way to do this is to confine them to a certain location from the time you bring them home. As they get into the routine of using the bathroom there you can allow them open range in the yard.
