Precision Cutting Tools - A Big Difference
|
When a cutting tool is called "precision", that does not necessarily mean that when it is new it makes more precise cuts, holes, corners, etc, than other new cutting tools. Most brand new cutting tools will make good cuts, but the difference comes with what tools wear down or break easily and what tools stand the test of time and heavy use. "Precision" can also mean more variables in the types of cutting that a tool can do, and also how straight a tool can cut or how precisely deep a tool can cut. "Precision" means very close to exact, and precision cutting tools mean that they can do more exacting, detailed, and custom tasks, for much longer than other types of cutting tools. An example of where more precise cutting tools are used is the military. Military specifications hold to extremely high standards, and the cutting tools that are used for military projects need to be the best. The aerospace industry also uses these types of cutting tools, for obvious reasons. It is mostly high quality materials and exact calibration measurements that set precision tools apart from the rest. Precision tools for cutting are often made with tungsten carbide, which is a compound made from tungsten and carbon. Tungsten carbide generally lasts an average of five times longer than other tool materials. Diamond may also be used for the cutting parts of tools, as diamond is an extremely strong and durable element. In the medical field, surgical instruments will be made of tungsten carbide or the cutting tips will contain diamond. Surgeons need guaranteed sharp and precise instruments, and even though surgical instruments are replaced frequently, they are still made from only the best materials. For home workshops or even businesses, it may not really be necessary to use precision tools that are of the caliber of what is used by the military, aerospace industry, and the medical industry, but it wouldn't be unreasonable. Though prices for these types of cutting tools are very high, they do tend to pay for themselves eventually with more durability, more precise cuts, and less maintenance.
