Preparing Your Garden Faucets For Winter



Your outside faucet is a handy tool for keeping your garden looking great through the growing season. Heck its even handy for washing the car and filling up the hot tub. But when the cooler weather begins to arrive youll want to prepare your garden faucet for winter.

If you want to make sure you have no hassles with your outside faucet you will want to shut the water off. As soon as the freezing temperatures begin to arrive you risk the possibility that the lines might freeze up so you need to prepare your faucet and piping.

If you live in the sunny south you can chuckle at the rest of us as we follow these steps to making sure our pipes survive those cold spells when they arrive. But for the rest of us this is serious business.

Before winter arrive you need to get prepared to make sure your pipes do not freeze up.

1. Start by disconnecting your garden hoses. Wrap them and drain them to make sure there is no water in them. Then put them away for the winter.2. Visit your local hardware store and pick up some heat wrap. Start at one end of the house and work your way through the entire house wrapping al of the pipes.3. If you have vents that are at the foundation level you should close them and seal them for the winter.4. Check your main water shut off valve to ensure it is properly functioning.5. Check your garden tap too to make sure it is properly opening and closing.6. Your underground sprinklers and soaker hoses need to also be shut off so that the water cannot freeze in the lines.7. If you get caught in the cold before things are taken care of just leave the tap dripping about 6 drops per minute.8. If you have had previous problems with lines freezing dont be afraid to follow that path as it will provide you with some great advice.

Your garden faucet is an important tool for keeping things green and lush. But when the season ends its time to prepare everything for winter. Its time you got ready.
