The hip is one of the most important parts of the body. It is necessary for mobility, work or sports performance, and other important physical actions. Any injury to the hip often results in pain and immobilization. Hip joint pain is a common problem among many individuals. It needs to be treated immediately and with great care because it may lead to more serious conditions. Hip joint pain is a common problem. There could be many causes for hip joint pain. In general, the treatment for hip pain may involve the use of heating pads, ice packs, engaging in physical therapies, and using prescription drugs. They are quite effective in reducing inflammation and providing relief from pain. But in most cases of hip joint pain, the patient is asked to rest the joint. This allows inflammation to subside. It also provides relief from acute pain. In some cases, patients may be advised to use crutches or a cane, to reduce the stress on the hip joints while walking. However, some cases of hip pain may not be cured with common treatments. In such cases, hip replacement surgery may be the only viable option. Hip replacement, also called total hip arthroplasty, can relieve pain and restore the range of motion that individuals need to go about their daily tasks. This medical procedure is intended to relieve pain by replacing the affected parts of the hip with prosthetic implants. Symptoms that might lead you to consider hip replacement include: Pain that keeps you awake at night Little or no relief from pain medications Difficulty walking up or down stairs Trouble standing from a seated position Having to stop activities you enjoy such as walking because of severe much pain In the past, hip replacement used to be a primary option for individuals aged 60 and above. But medical advancements have made this surgery stronger and longer lasting artificial joints that are feasible for more active people, including younger people. However, active individuals may need another surgery to replace worn out artificial hip joints after 15 or 20 years. Despite the health benefits of hip replacement surgery, individuals should remember that this procedure is not a do-it-all procedure. This procedure also entails certain health risks. Immediate risks during and after surgery include the development of blood clots that may come loose and block the arteries, cause excessive loss of blood and infections. Blood thinning medication is usually taken to reduce the risk of clots forming. However, these drugs should only be used if approved by a doctor or health professional. This is important in reducing the risks of side effects, allergies, drug interactions, and other adverse effects. Some elderly people experience short-term confusion and disorientation as a side effect of the anesthesia. In addition, it is also possible to incur nerve injury although this is very remote. Infections may also occur after the operation. To prevent infections, some doctors add antibiotics directly to the cement used to keep the replacement joint in place. Though hip replacement surgery is generally safe and effective, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Health professionals encourage individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a nutritious diet to lessen the development of injuries and other conditions that may harm the hip.
