Prevent side effects – use xenical with caution and adhere to the recommended dose

Xenical Side Effects

Most appetite suppressants are used as a short-term treatment in people with obesity. As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Xenical also. However, not everyone on Xenical will experience its side effects. Although, most side effects are mild and well tolerated, some can be unpleasant. However, most side effects usually improve as the body adjusts to the medication. Rarely, serious and even fatal side effects have been reported and most of them are easily treatable.

Xenical has been undergone serious clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred have been well documented and a comparative analysis has also been done. The results of a group taking the drug, was compared to the results of a group that did not use Xenical. As a result it became possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they occurred, and how well they could be compared. Side effects that affected the digestive system were found to be quite common. Therefore, if you pay attention to the amount of fat in your diet, a major hurdle is cleared. Hence, information on Xenical side effects would be useful.

Generally, most side effects occurred within the first three months of starting Xenical therapy. In about 50% of the patients, the side effects easily resolved within one to four weeks of treatment. However the side effects in some patients lasted for about six months or longer.

Minor Side Effects of Xenical

Possible common side effects with Xenical are:

  • Oily spotting or unrestrained anal oil seepage
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Gas with a small amount of oil or stool discharge
  • Fecal urgency with an uncontrolled need to have a bowel movement)
  • Fatty or oily stool
  • Oily evacuation that leaves an oily residue without any stool
  • Increased frequency of bowel movements
  • Nausea
  • Fecal incontinence where you have uncontrolled, spontaneous bowel movements

Most of the side effects that are mentioned above affect the digestive tract and can easily be avoided by ingesting reduced fat content in the diet. Because, Xenical is proven to decrease the absorption of fat, 33% of the fat stays back in the digestive tract. This is what is largely responsible for most of the bothersome and sometimes embarrassing Xenical side effects. These side effects are more likely experienced when you eat too much fat. But, as you continue taking Xenical, you will gradually learn to balance different foods containing different amounts of fat and which of them work best for you. In fact, studies have revealed that with time the side effects occurred much less commonly.

Other common side effects of Xenical include:

  • The flu
  • A respiratory tract infection like common cold
  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual irregularity
  • Anxiety
  • Ear infection

Major Side Effects of Xenical

Although, some Xenical side effects occur infrequently, they are potentially serious and must immediately be reported to a healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

  • Kidney stones - Patients with a history of oxalate kidney stones, receiving Orlistat, may develop increased levels of oxalate in the urine thereby increasing the risk of kidney stones
  • Severe stomach pain
  • Gallbladder disease (or worsening of preexisting gallbladder disease)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, including:
    • Unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing

You may or may not experience some or any of the Xenical side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to tell if a particular side effect like nausea is caused by Xenical or due to some other factors. Therefore, you the individual must make sure that you let the healthcare provider know about the side effects, if any, while taking Xenical. In addition, the healthcare provider must also be informed if you develop something that "just does not feel right." It may not necessarily be a Xenical side effect, but diagnosis and treatment of the problem will save you any added trouble.
