Private Dental Insurance Finding the Best One for You

Having a good dental insurance is as important as having a good medical insurance, and having private dental insurance can be a good choice for many people. There are three basic types of dental insurance: HMO and PPO dental insurance, and private dental insurance. HMO and PPO dental insurances are similar in that the dentist signs a contract stating that he or she will accept a fee schedule set by the insurance company. The dentist does not charge more for covered procedures than is agreed upon, and in turn the insurance company will pay the majority of the fee when a covered patient undergoes a dental procedure. The patient usually only has to pay a minimal co-payment. With HMO or PPO insurance coverage you must choose a dentist that is on a list that is provided by the insurance company. Of course, the list will consist of the dentists that have signed a contract with the insurance company.

Private dental insurance differs from the other kinds of dental insurance in that the dentist does not have to stick with a set fee schedule. He or she signs up with the insurance company, and the insurance company pays a portion of the cost of covered dental procedures. Usually the insurance company will pay a certain percentage of the cost of procedures, although often they will not pay more than a percentage of what they believe is a reasonable charge.

So why can choosing private dental insurance be beneficial? Often, it means a significant savings. HMO and PPO insurance plans are almost always higher priced than private plans. Even without a set fee schedule, the insurance companies usually dont have to pay out as much money for a procedure with a private plan as they do with the other two types of plans. With private dental insurance, there is almost always a deductible, meaning that the patient will have to pay a pre-determined amount of money for dental services out of pocket before the insurance company will begin to pay. For these reasons, you will generally pay less in monthly premiums for private insurance then for the other types.

Whether you receive your dental insurance as part of a company benefit plan or buy your own dental insurance outright, it is best to take your time and make the best choice possible. In many cases, private dental insurance can be the best choice.
