Many Americans have found in eBay a great opportunity to produce supplemental or additional income. eBay has 150 million registered users and, in only one year, goods of $34 billion value were bought and sold on the website.

There are many reasons for which sellers find in eBay a great market for their businesses: you can start a business fast and easy, you do not need a huge budget for the start, you do not have to acquire special knowledge and skills, almost any item can be sold on eBay, you do not work by schedule, your potential buyers are about 150 million in number and you get access to a huge amount of traffic while paying almost nothing.

All sounds really great. But then here come the two big questions: what to sell and where to find it.

What to sell?

There are certain tendencies on the eBay market, like on any other market. Over ten percent of total sales for products like: computer hardware and software, tickets, travel, books, consumer electronics, cosmetics and fragrances, toys and video games, and flowers, cards and gifts, are made online. To get an answer to your question, a good place to start looking is on eBay or other sites that show which items customers ask about and which are sold.

In Demand

Another thing that might interest you as a seller is the link “In Demand” that you will see on the page “Category Tips” under each category. Here you see a list of the most sold items of a category and the most searched items as well. Also, try to find out what people are looking for on other websites, so you become aware of the market trends.

Where to find items to sell?

1. Your own home

If you want to start selling on eBay and your budget is very small, start by searching for items to sell in your own home. Search through all the items that you have and never use and put them on sale, maybe someone really needs them or wants them.

2. Flea markets and garage sales

Here you may find a lot of interesting items. Try not to spend too much and choose only goods that you know that will have a chance of being sold.

3. Liquidations and auctions

Look for estate auctions, but be careful to not let yourself carried away. Keep a fix price in your head and do not bid over it. Also, a great source for cheaper items are local liquidators. It is worth taking a tour to visit them for some bargain prices.

4. Drop shipping businesses

Manufacturers use a technique called drop shipping to sell their items. The method works like this: the wholesaler or the manufacturer gets an order from a retailer, then packs the product and sends it to the client. Search for these opportunities in order to find items to sell on eBay.

5. eBay

Yes, even eBay. There are many great deals on eBay and if you are determined to find them, they can prove to be a real mine of gold. Search for wholesale items, by choosing “Items listed as lots” when you search for a product. Become a retailer and sell the items bought as a wholesale, piece by piece, to make a profit. A proper knowledge of the market trends is a must when you try to make business this way.
