Proper Care Of Laminate Floors
|
Laminate floors have a great many advantages for today's busy homeowner, including greater durability, a wide selection, excellent versatility and easy installation. In addition, laminate flooring is quite easy to care for, requiring only some knowledge and some common sense care tips. Perhaps the most important thing about caring for new laminate floors is to follow the recommendations made by the manufacturer. It is important to read the materials and the warranty carefully, and to follow the post installation care instructions carefully. Failure to care for the floor properly could void the warranty. Following the post installation care tips is essential. Cleaning laminate floors is not difficult, and most flooring surfaces will be far easier to care for than carpet and other flooring surfaces. Even so it is important to clean the floor properly. Wet mopping should be avoided, since excess water could seep under the floor and cause damage. It is best to vacuum the floor, and then damp mop it if necessary. It is important, of course to use only approved cleaners and chemicals on the laminate flooring surface. Each manufacturer should have a list of preferred cleaners, and it is important to follow these recommendations. Acetone, for instance, makes a good cleaner for cigarette burns and nail polish, while mineral spirits are the preferred method for removing oil and tar stains. Keeping the new flooring surface clean will be half the battle, and it is important to keep as much dirt, grease, oil, sand and grit off of the floor as possible, both when it is new and after it has been in place for awhile. The best practice is to place a doormat at all doors leading in from the outdoors, as well as from the garage or breezeway. The simple and inexpensive purchase of a doormat can save you lots of money and prevent you from having to replace the floors before their time. One of the chief ways laminate flooring gets damaged is when furniture is moved. It is easy to scratch the flooring surface when sliding heavy furniture across the floor. To avoid this, it is best to place felt or plastic caps on the feet of desks, tables, chairs and other items, and to use a dolly to move large or bulky items. It will take a bit longer, but it will help the flooring surface survive intact. About The Author: Alphonso has been working in the home remodeling industry for last 5 years.
