Proper Silver Table Ware Care

The table ware that was handed down to you from family members or received when you set up your first home can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come, provided that you understand how to properly care for it.

While there are many different kinds of table ware on the market today, the most highly valued variety of table ware still remains silver. The problem with silver table ware that many people experience; however, is the maintenance required to keep silver table ware shining like new.

One of the best ways that you can cut down on the amount of polishing required for your silver table ware is to store it properly. While most people are aware that silver should be store in a proper table ware case, they are not aware that the environment in which they store their table ware contributes much to the amount of maintenance required in order to retain that beautiful silver luster. If you tend to store your table ware in a room or area of your home in which there is a great amount of humidity, you will find that your table ware will require a large amount of maintenance. This is because humidity is the greatest contributor to tarnish on silver pieces. Ideally, the environment in which you store your silver table ware should have no more than 50% humidity. Obviously, this can be difficult to get around if you live in an area where there is naturally a lot of humidity; however, there are some things you can do to reduce even that humidity for the sake of your table ware. First, consider the rooms of your home for possible storage solutions. Are some rooms damper than others? Also, consider using a de-humidifier in the room you select in order to cut down on humidity levels.

It is a common misconception that you should polish your silver table ware frequently. This idea is actually not a good idea because frequent polishing will wear down the finish on your table ware. Therefore, it's a good idea to only polish your silver when you absolutely must. By following the above tips, you can significantly reduce the frequency of cleanings.

When it is necessary to clean your silver table ware, you should take the time to first dust your pieces with a soft cloth before embarking on the actual polishing process. This will remove any loose bit of dust, which could damage your silver when you polish it.

After you have dusted the pieces, gently rinse it with warm water and a gentle dishwashing soap. This will help to remove any food particles that may have adhered to your table ware. Under no circumstances should silver table ware be soaked in water. This can cause permanent damage. Next, dry your table ware carefully with a soft cloth.

The next step is to begin the polishing process. There are a number of good polishing products on the market; some with a paste base and others with a foam or liquid base. All work equally well; so you can choose whichever product you find easier to work with.

When applying the cleanser, be sure to do so in a circular motion. After your table ware is clean and has a shiny appearance, it's time to wash once again and dry. Make sure that all polishing material has been removed; especially from intricate designs.

The final step is to store your table ware carefully. Remember that it is always best to use specialized packing material manufactured especially for storage of silver pieces. Other materials can cause your silver table ware to tarnish even more quickly.
