Protein Diet - Does it Work

Protein diets are effective at producing quick results. They work on the principal that protein cannot be turned into fat if your body doesn't have enough carbohydrates to make that transition. If you have wondered in you should go on a low carb diet you should take stock in your general health and in your pocketbook. First if you have any type of medical condition then you will want to consult with your physician before starting any diet plan. Secondly, low carb diets are hard on your food budget because protein is expensive, especially when compared to carbohydrates.

No matter what protein diet that you choose to go on you will have several phases to transition through. Most of these diets start with a two week period called detoxification. During this period of time your carbohydrates will be significantly reduced, and your food choices will be limited. You may also be required to give up caffeine during this initial two weeks. During the first twenty four to forty eight hours of the detoxification phase of this type of diet you will feel bad. If you are used to having caffeine in your diet you may have a serious headache that doesn't go away, you may feel weak, and you will generally just feel lousy. However, if you can make it through these first few days you will start to feel better and less hungry. At about the ten day mark you should start to notice some signs of weight loss including loser fitting clothing and a thinner appearance. This is when the weight will really seem to melt off.

At about the two week mark your detoxification phase will generally end and your carbohydrate levels will increase, as will your food choices. Some fruits and whole grains will probably be added back into your diet. At this point you may start to notice that you are having troubles moving your bowels. If you find yourself in this predicament you will need to find a fiber laxative or supplement that is a low carb product. The diet book that you are using as your guide should offer you suggestions about what types of laxative or fiber supplements to use. During this second phase your weight loss will still seem significant, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

The next phase of a protein diet will increase your carbohydrate levels once again. During this phase your weight loss will slow, but if you add in exercise and don't go overboard on your daily caloric intake you should still be able to lose between one and two pounds per week. As weight loss slows down in this phase many people become discouraged and they start to cheat. The more they cheat the less weight they are able to lose each week. This in turn discourages people even more and many people give up at this point.

If you want to make a protein diet work for you, you will need to bring to the program the will power to stick to the diet plan even when it seems to not be working. If you go a couple of weeks without losing weight, or if you find yourself gaining weight then you always return to the parameters set out by the detoxification period. If you are interested in a low carb diet, the most common versions include the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and the Protein Power Life Plan Program.
