Protein Weight Loss - What You Have to Do
|
The first step in learning about protein weight loss is learning about the basics of a low carb diet. A low carb diet starts off by limiting the amount of carbohydrates that you consume each day. Your diet will consist mainly of protein sources like beef, pork, poultry, dairy, and fish. Some low carb diets allow you to eat as much protein as you like, while other restrict the amount of protein consumed at each level of the diet. Fats are generally not restricted. During the first two weeks of a low carb diet you will generally be restricted to 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. After the first two weeks you will be able to increase your carb counts each week, as long as you are still losing weight. If you stop losing weight or if you start gaining weight then you will need to reduce the amount of carbs that you consume until your start losing weight again. The third step in learning about protein weight loss is learning about how to adjust your protein levels during the different phases of your diet. The amount of protein that you are allowed to each day is going to depend on how much you weigh, and in some cases how active you are. Generally you should consume about 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight if you are an active adult. This means that a 150 pound woman who is very active should consume about 150 grams of protein a day. As you lose weight you will need to reduce the amount of protein that you consume accordingly. The fourth step to understanding low carb diets is learning how to select the right foods. Each diet variation will have its own rules for what types of foods you will be allowed to each at each phase of the diet. During the first two weeks of most low carb diets you will be generally restricted to low fat, low cholesterol animal protein sources, fats, and green leafy vegetables. Shopping during the first two weeks will need to include low fat cheeses, sugar free condiments like mustard and spices, lean cuts of meat, and fish. Shellfish will generally be off limits during this phase of the diet as will caffeinated beverages. During the later phases of the low carb diet you will be able to add in whole grain products like cereals and baked goods, as well as low carb breads, pastas, and sauces. You will also be able to add in more fruits and vegetables. When you start shopping it will be better for you to select whole raw foods, as opposed to processed foods.
