Quality Assurance - A Growing Industry


Quality assurance is a concept that has developed into its own industry. Most businesses, whether they realize it or not, have some measures of checks and balances in place. A business who counts down a drawer or kiosk at the end of the night is practicing quality assurance . After all, they do not just throw all the money in the drawer into a deposit bag and assume it is all there. No, the manager is responsible for making sure the associates collected the correct amounts and gave the right amounts of change. Ensuring the count and deposit is correct by using a sales report against the actual money in the drawer is just one example of how checks and balances contribute to the profitability of a business.

If we take another look, quality assurance has developed into a very necessary business practice for goods and services. Take car seats for example, a car seat maker must check that factory guidelines are being followed exactly as the manufacturing guide specifies. Temperatures settings that are molding plastics that will hold the safety of a child in its grips and can not be too hot or too cold. A fluctuation in temperature may make the plastic too pliable or too brittle. This is an example of how checks and balances are very important and can save the lives of children. After all, trusting parents place their infants into a car seat in order to protect them in the unfortunate event of an accident and to keep them stable and safe during normal traveling. These parents believe in the quality of a product enough to entrust their children to it.

Food and drugs also must adhere to strict requirements established by various laws. Inspectors may randomly show up to a farm, factory or distributing center in order to ensure that all the guidelines are being followed. Inspectors must double to check to see that nothing unsafe or hazardous is contaminating a food or drug. Contaminated food could result in an epidemic sickness and the consequences of a contaminated drug could be even more deadly to society. The population may not even realize how important these kinds of quality assurance measures are and how much we rely on their accuracy.

In the service industry, quality assurance is vital to the reputation and customer retention of a business. A retail store may send an undercover shopper in to collect various data for a company. Some of the most common things a retail provider may be interested in knowing are how clean the restroom are, if the property was well-kept, did an associate greet them and offer to help, how knowledgeable the staff was, if they were offered any other services or products with their purchase, etc. These are things that a customer would be aware of and notice if they were not up to par.

This information would allow a retailer the unique opportunity to view their business through the eyes of one of their customers. With that information, they will be able to determine what practices work and what practices may be ineffective or even pushing customers away.

Clearly, checks and balances are necessary for any business and every industry. We all rely on the behind the scenes work that businesses use to ensure a quality, safe product.
